How Does a Bee See the World? Five Eyes and Light We Cannot See

The senses a bee relies on when it searches for nectar differ fundamentally from ours, and they have been measured precisely.

Five eyes, not two

A bee has two large compound eyes on either side of its head, and three simple eyes called ocelli on the top of the head, according to Michigan State University's honey bee anatomy page. The compound eyes are responsible for forming the image, while the three ocelli measure light intensity and help with balance during flight.

Thousands of units in every eye

The compound eye is built from tiny optical units called ommatidia. A direct count published in PLOS ONE in 2013 gave these figures for the western honey bee: 5,049 units in the worker, 4,949 in the queen, and 10,901 in the drone. The drone's eye therefore carries about twice as many units as the worker's, which suits its single task: tracking a queen in the air. The figure 6,900 circulates widely online, and it is an upper limit rather than an average.

Colours shifted away from ours

The bee has three types of photoreceptor, with peak responses at 344 nanometres in the ultraviolet, 436 in the blue, and 544 in the green, according to a review published in the Journal of Comparative Physiology. Its visual spectrum is therefore shifted towards shorter wavelengths than ours: it sees the ultraviolet light we cannot see, and it has no receptor for red, so red appears to it dark and colourless. Many flowers carry ultraviolet patterns rather like landing strips, entirely invisible to the human eye.

A compass made of skylight

The bee can perceive the polarisation of skylight, a property our own eyes cannot detect, and from it infer the position of the sun even when cloud partly hides it. More precisely, this compass complements the sun compass and the memory of landmarks; it does not replace them.

Flight by the numbers

  • Flight speed: about 24 kilometres per hour on average, reaching roughly 32. A bee laden with nectar is slower.
  • Wingbeat frequency: about 230 beats per second, according to a measurement published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in 2005.

The stroke pattern itself is unusual: a very small amplitude at a very high frequency, which explains how the bee carries a relatively heavy load on two small wings.
