The Waggle Dance: A Map Drawn in Movement

When a worker finds a good source of nectar and returns to the hive, she does not simply deliver her load. She performs a repeated movement on the surface of the vertical comb that conveys the coordinates of the source to the rest of the workers. This is the waggle dance.
Direction: An Angle Instead of a Compass
The bee walks in a straight line while waggling, then loops back in a half circle to repeat the line, tracing a path that resembles a figure eight. The angle between that straight line and the upward direction on the vertical comb equals the angle between the nectar source and the sun. That is, the bee substitutes the upward direction inside the dark hive for the direction of the sun outside, then draws the angle with her body.
Distance: Time Instead of a Ruler
The duration of the waggle run encodes the distance: the longer it lasts, the further away the source. It is commonly said that one second equals one kilometre, and that is not accurate. Measurements published in the journal PeerJ in 2021, on bees trained to feeders, gave 0.41 seconds at 100 metres and 2.20 seconds at 1700 metres. One second therefore corresponds to roughly 500 to 600 metres, and the relationship is not linear; its slope falls as the distance increases.
Local Dialects
The calibration itself differs between subspecies and locations, to the point that researchers now speak of dance dialects. This is why the Sussex team built its own local calibration rather than relying on von Frisch's original curve.
Karl von Frisch and the Nobel Prize
The Austrian ethologist Karl von Frisch decoded this dance and published his standard work in 1967. In 1973 the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded jointly to him, Konrad Lorenz and Nikolaas Tinbergen. One detail deserves care here: the official wording of the prize is “for their discoveries concerning organization and elicitation of individual and social behaviour patterns”, not for the bee dance specifically.
